Dutch magazine LetsGoDigital revealed LG's patent depicting a dual-fold device with a stylus. LetsGoDigital created the offerings based on plans from a design patent granted to LG in April 2019. The patent filed with the Korean Patent Office shows a device that folds twice, similar to the foldable model that Xiaomi overshadowed in January.
The design cleverly includes a pen that can be stored away in one of the hinges. In its convertible case, the device resembles a 16:10 tablet, with a thin bezel on three sides and a wider "handle" housing a triple camera.
When folded, the device takes the aspect ratio of a modern smartphone, with a thin bezel on top and bottom. The device described in the patent documents is very thin, but the actual product may appear different.
There is no guarantee that LG will bring this specific design to the market. The company experimented with some flexible ideas for the presentation, including the express transit model. However, the design revealed today appears to be easier to implement, which is crucial at this point.
The folds we've seen so far have suffered from a lack of refinement, both in terms of design and underlying technology. Samsung and Huawei (not to mention Royole) have both succeeded in producing sleek, smooth foldable products, although this is to be expected from first-generation devices with limited operation.
Report the details of what Samsung is doing to update Galaxy Fold
LG, meanwhile, is in no hurry to unleash its own folds. In early 2019, the company said it would not try to beat Samsung and Huawei in the market, choosing instead to launch optional secondary display accessories. But that doesn't mean LG has stopped working folds in the background.
Don't expect to hear any LG foldable announcements at IFA this week. The company will likely announce the more mundane LG G8X, along with a possible secondary display.
Meanwhile, Samsung is preparing to re-announce the Galaxy Fold issue and will it be the second time?
