With the end of summer approaching it is time to start the fall phone season. While we have one new phone on our list, the likelihood of seeing a number of these phones discounted in August is very high, as retailers are looking to dump stock at reduced prices to make way for upcoming fall launches. Without further ado, let's check out the 10 best Android phones you can buy in August 2018.
Basic phones
This is the first time ever that Essential has put it on their list of the 10 best Android phones, and it's for a good reason: They've made it way, and it's showing up in the results. Essential launched their first phone very early on, and it felt like an experimental device in every way when it launched last August. Now, after a full year, the PH PH-1, or better known as the base phone, is full circle and offers a great experience at a lower price than any other phone out there. It was recently sold for as low as $ 250 on Amazon Prime Day, and the specs for the base phone can't be beat even at the regular price under $ 400. Moreover, Essential has kept an update schedule that rivals the Google Pixel line, offers timely monthly updates, and so far it is the only non-Pixel-branded phone on the market with Android 9 Pie update as well. If you are looking for a phone with impressive specs, one of the most amazing builds in the industry, an unprecedented update schedule and a price to kill, then the base phone is what you want.
Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium
Sony's latest premium-grade flagship outperforms its recently released smaller cousins in a number of ways, not the least in the price category. The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, which is selling for £ 799 / $ 999 / USD, beats the base price of Android phones, but it does deal with some serious new specs to deal with that. With a large 5.8 inch 4K HDR screen, you will be blown away when watching 4K HDR content on the phone. This screen is capable of playing 4K HDR video that the new dual camera system can record on the back, and there are very few additional tricks that hit the proverbial phone case. It's as fast as it comes and contains some great features, but it is lower on the list as it doesn't pack the value that some of the other devices offer here.
LG G7 ThinQ or LG V35 ThinQ
The latest duo of LG’s flagship devices are seeing wider circulation and lower prices compared to July, including the availability of Project Project from Google. Both phones offer the latest LG features that run on Android 8.0 Oreo, and both feature the same improved sensors in the dual camera module on the back. This includes a new Ultra Low Light mode on the secondary wide-angle camera, as well as an improved front camera as well. The G7 ThinQ packs an ultra-bright IPS LCD display in addition to what LG calls the Boombox speaker. This new speaker is able to provide a higher level of sound than many previous LG phones, as well as an excellent sound quality when placed on a table or other surface. Meanwhile, the V35 ThinQ offers an OLED panel and a thinner and lighter build without cutting the notch on the screen.
HTC U12 +
HTC U12 + got some mixed reviews, including ours, mainly due to some general bugs of the phone, including the new pressure-sensitive buttons on the side. To mitigate these issues, HTC released an update that not only addresses the issues we encountered with regard to buttons, but also adds a little bezel feel and adds a number of new features as well. Not only is it refreshing to see such a rapid response to widespread issues, but also one that actually puts in place a fix rather than providing a workaround or first aid solution. HTC U12 + features some of the best video recording ever on the market, including 4K silky smooth recording at 60FPS with Active Hybrid Stabilization, as well as the ability to zoom in on the video and focus specifically on the audio source. It's HTC's best phone in quite some time, and this transparent blue hue is definitely one of the kind in the industry that's chock full of similar-looking black panels.
BlackBerry KEY2
BlackBerry KEY2 is the most intuitive BlackBerry phone to date, and despite what you might think of the spec sheet at first, it is a groundbreaking phone to try. BlackBerry KEY2 offers the most unique experience on Android at the moment, ignoring many industry trends, such as display and longer gestures, on something entirely BlackBerry at its core: the physical keyboard. This physical keyboard is not only intended for typing, but it also provides a convenience factor that other phones simply cannot, with the ability to quickly launch dozens of applications and functions from anywhere on the phone, thanks to the new Comfort Key. That's just a small slice of what BlackBerry has to offer with KEY2, and one of the reasons we love it so much.
Huawei P20 Pro
Huawei has recently achieved big sales, selling more than 100 million devices so far in 2018 alone. The Huawei P20 Pro is responsible for a decent percentage of that, including the award for most successful Huawei phone in Western Europe to date. No wonder either, with the camera, Huawei is packing the P20 Pro, which sees constant accolades and praises being the best smartphone camera on the market. Apart from that, Huawei has designed a stylish, durable, thin and powerful phone, with a gorgeous OLED screen on the front, as well as some amazing new features across the previous generation phones. Huawei has also created some completely stunning colors for the P20 lineup with glossy, muted shades and color-changing shades. It is an excellent phone and this is a sight to be seen in every way.
OnePlus 6
OnePlus has long delivered one of the best values in the industry with every single release, packed with the absolute latest specs while always coming at a lower price than any other flagship phone. The OnePlus 6 is OnePlus' most expensive phone to date, but it offers some of the absolute smallest loops in the industry, plus a groundbreaking experience on every level. The OnePlus 6 camera is a recommended purchase on every level, as it is a killer camera, super-fast performance, super-fast charging, and a feature set that rival many other phones. We had used the phone for more than a month before submitting the review, ensuring that it was able to withstand long-term expectations, and you can see the results in our review.
Sony Xperia XZ2
Sony surprised many with the complete redesign of the Xperia series when it launched the Xperia XZ2, a phone that has amazing battery life, some of the absolute best headphones in the industry, and a camera that offers the highest quality slow-motion video out there. It also got a brand new design that is unlike anything else, it is ultimately a fingerprint scanner working in the US, meaning that anyone around the world can finally buy a flagship Xperia device with a fingerprint scanner that is enabled out of the box. It's Sony's fastest and most functional phone to date, and one that constantly impresses, no matter what you're looking for in a modern smartphone.
Google Pixel 2 XL
Google's Pixel streak consistently tops the charts when considering recommended phones, which is surprising. Android is Google's proprietary operating system, so it makes sense that Google's own devices should make better use of the strengths and design of Android. Google offers two Pixel 2 sizes, but the Pixel 2 XL has a longer 18: 9 aspect ratio and can hold more information, while reducing the bezel size. Front speakers have become a rarity in the smartphone world, but Google has conquered them here despite increasing the screen size and narrowing the edges. Moreover, both Pixel 2 phones easily feature a camera at the top of the charts regardless of which metric you use, and regular Google updates keep a newer version of Android compared to nearly any other phone.
Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 + or Note 9
Samsung has been making the best Android devices overall for quite some time, and 2018 is no exception. Although this year many are "bored" in terms of new things, Samsung has mastered what it does, offering more features and a more rounded device than anyone else. Three devices make up the trio of Samsung's 2018 flagship, and while the Galaxy S9 and S9 + have both been available for a few months now, Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 will be out on August 24, and it's definitely the best device you can buy. This does not mean that it will be cheap, and while it is not the first thousand dollars to be brought on the market, it is definitely the latest, and the $ 1249 version with 8GB RAM and 512GB RAM makes it the highest spec phone money can buy. No matter which model you choose, Samsung phones are the undisputed royalty in 2018, and it will be tough to beat Samsung after what it introduced this year.
