An innovative Haven app to turn any Android phone into a surveillance system

Haven. The app turns your smartphone into a security surveillance system, all you need is an extra Android phone, a dose of paranoia and a bit of paranoia! In a statement to Wired, Edward Snowden said: “Imagine if you had a guard dog that you could take with you anywhere and leave it in the room when you are not in it. The basic idea is to make sure that the place around you is safe and you can trust it.

How does the “Haven” application work?

Put your Android phone that you installed the app on wherever you want to be safe - in your bedroom, in the office, or anywhere you think someone is stalking you or trying to spy on you, whether it's your family, roommate, or Your friend or any person or entity you suspect is trying to spy on you.

The application will use the phone's voice pickup or microphone to monitor and record audio when it senses its presence, turn on the camera to capture video of the intruder, and use a component in the phone to monitor any movement of the device itself. The application also relies on the ambient light sensor in the phone to monitor any difference in the ambient lighting, and the energy monitor harnesses to investigate whether it is connected to a power source for charging or removed from the charger. Then the application will automatically send you notifications - including audio and video files - to your primary phone in any of the mentioned cases.
Notification delivery mechanism and history browsing

For added protection, notifications are sent via Signal, an encrypted messaging app authenticated and certified by Edward Snowden himself. If you do not want to receive instant updates, you can view the phone history on which Haven is installed, whether that is remotely using the Tor browser or on the phone itself.

If the primary purpose of Haven is to protect your laptop or devices from anyone trying to tamper with them, but it can also be used in other scenarios, it is a less expensive alternative to surveillance cameras and can be used in more sensitive situations.

Elva Galperin, director of cybersecurity for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said in an interview with The Intercept that "Haven" might be a good way to help people who are worried about their abusive partners.

A trial version of the Haven app is available on the Play Store.
