It's a game that does this by constantly playing with your expectations - even before you start playing.
If you have to take a quick look at the Doki Doki Literature Club description, her trailer, or screenshots on her front, you'd see a game that looks like every other cottie dating sim about a high school boy follow multiple attractive girls.
