Apple has long embarked on developing its self-driving car, a project that Tim Cook previously described as "the mother of all Amnesty International".
To generate further discussion on this topic, the company has published a patent for a new "autonomous navigation system". The latter occurs as the title of the document.
With little information from the company on its patent intentions, the company filed a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday.
As reported by NBC, the tech giant has been under wraps for a while. In fact, it is believed that Apple has been developing the technology since 2015.
Of course, Apple has not responded to the rumors, but the patent document does not give a hint of how the system might operate.
The main goal of the patent is to make autonomous navigation systems more efficient, according to the filing. Currently, it can take some time for these techniques to generate maps with great detail. Apple is looking to change this.
Most of the navigation technologies used in self-driving cars rely on maps and sensors to monitor real-life elements that change on a daily basis. This helps cars handle intense computing workloads.
Apple doesn't think that's good enough, though. As noted by NBC, it proposes a system to control the vehicle "independently of any data received from any external devices of the vehicle and any locally stored navigation data to the vehicle prior to any monitoring of navigation."
It's essentially a more accurate computerized model for controlling self-driving cars, taking advantage of powerful sensors and processors. The system will be able to predict routes accurately.
NPCC attempted to get in touch with Apple for comment, but it did not respond to the report. And there is no word about when the system becomes a reality. So the rumor mill continues.
